Swachhta Pakhwada – 2020

On 16.12.2020, the inaugural day of “Swachhta Pakhwada”all the ICAR-DCR, Puttur staffs were assembled at Administrative block for taking swachhta pledge. Dr. J. Dinakara Adiga (Nodal Officer, Swachh Bharat, ICAR-DCR, Puttur) read-out the swachhta pledge and all the scientific, technical and supporting staffs of our directorate were taken the pledge by following him. The Nodal officer also briefed about the importance of cleanliness in our life and its impact on our society and environment. The date-wise action plan for the “Swachhta Pakhwada” to be conducted from 16.12.2020 to 31.12.2020 was informed to all the staffs of our directorate. The banners representing Swachhta Pakhwada and Swachh Bharat were displayed at prominent places of the Directorate.

On 17.12.2020, ICAR – Directorate of Cashew Research organized a training on e-office implementation to all the ICAR-DCR staffs. Shri Janardhanan T. E, Administrative Officer (ICAR-DCR, Puttur) has briefed the objectives of e-office and explained the features available in the webpage. In the demonstration session, each and every essential feature was well explained and staffs actively interacted with queries to clarify their doubts. It was a very useful session to the individual staff as well as to the controlling officers. ICAR-ERP system was also explained for the better understanding and utilization of available facilities to carry out paperless functions. Besides, weeding out of old records, disposing old and obsolete materials was discussed and suggestions were given to the concerned staffs for further necessary actions.

As a part of “Swachhta Pakhwada” being conducted at ICAR-DCR, Puttur, on 18.12.2020 the sanitization and cleaning of institute premises like, Women cell and Maintenance unit was carried out. The roads were cleaned and stubbles from the both sides were collected. The surroundings of Women cell and Maintenance unit were first weeded then the waste was collected. After the cleaning and mopping the units they were sanitized. The waste material collected from the unit and its surroundings were dumped in the decomposing pit for utilizing it as manure in the forthcoming year. The ICAR-DCR staffs were actively participated in this programme.

On 19.12.2020, our Directorate old building terrace was cleaned and sanitized. The old furniture and equipments which need to be condemned were dusted and arranged in an organized manner. Empty bottles/containers of solvents and acids were collected and discarded to the safe place. Among these, biodegradable and non-biodegradable were sorted-out and disposed accordingly. Solutions to reduce the purchase of non-biodegradable containers were discussed. The stocks which need to be auctioned are separated. ICAR-DCR staffs were actively participated in this programme by following COVID guidelines


On 20.12.2020, it was planned to conduct Swachhta activity at Residential campus at ICAR-DCR, Kemminje, Puttur. The area nearby play ground was cleaned and the plastic bags were collected and heaped on a particular place for proper disposal. The recycling of nursery polythene bags and media used for raising cashew seedlings was discussed for the future activities. The ICAR-DCR staffs were actively participated in the event.

On 21.12.2020, as a part of “Swachhta Pakhwada” activity ICAR-DCR has conducted the quiz programme for all the staffs. Dr. D. Balasubramanian, Principal Scientist (AS&PE) and his team members namely, Dr. Veena G.L and Dr. Manjunatha K conducted the event. A total of 15 staffs from ICAR-DCR have participated in five groups. The event was comprised with various rounds and mainly focused on “Swachh Bharat” and “Swachhta Pakhwada”. The other staff of the Directorate has participated in the programme as audience. This programme was informative and eye-opening regarding “Swachh Bharat Mission” to all the staffs.

As a date-wise activity for Swachhta Pakhwada, on 22.12.2020, ICAR-DCR has conducted a debate on topic “Are Plastics Essential Part of the Human Life?”. Dr. Siddanna Savadi, Scientist (Ag. Biotechnology) conducted the event. Dr. J. Dinakara Adiga, Principal Scientist (Hort.), Dr. Shamsudheen M, Senior Scientist (Soil Science) and Dr, Vanitha K, Scientist (Ag. Entomology) served as judges to evaluate the participants.  The participants were allowed to speak in favor and against the given topic. The participants debated by highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of the plastics and how to mitigate the present conditions as well. The event was informative and thought provoking to all the staffs.

On 23.12.2020, “Kisan Diwas” was organized at ICAR-DCR in the Directorate’s Main conference hall. A total of 30 farmers participated in the event from Dakshina Kannada district. The event started with ICAR song as well as Kisan song of the State of Karnataka. This was followed by welcome address from Dr. Eradasappa, Scientist (Plant Breeding). The programme was chaired by Dr. Raviprasad, T. N. Principal Scientist (Ag. Entomology) and Dr. J. D. Adiga, Principal Scientist (Hort.) & Nodal Officer (Swachh Bharat). As an event schedule, Mr. Manikandan (Sr. Technical Officer) delivered a speech on eco-friendly operation of pesticide application in the field and precaution to be taken before the spray. The presidential address was given by Dr. Raviprasad T.N., Principal Scientist (Ag. Entomology) and who emphasized the importance of agriculture and farmers role in the economy of our country. The farmers were interacted regarding plant protection measures of cashew cultivation. The Nodal officer (Swachh Bharat) has addressed the gathering by stating the importance of reducing plastic in farming and in day-to-day life. He also briefed about importance of farm machinery in view of shortage of man power for farm operations. Further, farm implements like pruning knife, secateurs, cow mat and seedlings of cashew and coconut were distributed to the farmers. At the end of the programme Mr. Raghuram Kukkude (Senior Technical Officer) delivered vote of thanks. The COVID guidelines were strictly followed by the farmers and staffs of ICAR-DCR, Puttur.

On 24.12.2020, Swachhta activity for Swachhta Pakhwada was conducted at Residential campus, ICAR-DCR, Kemminje campus, Puttur. The residential park was cleaned by sweeping, collecting plastic covers and debris. The parasites grown on the ornamental plants were removed. The Director (Acting) of ICAR-DCR addressed the staffs and motivated to keep the office and residential premises clean and tidy. The collected debris and wastes were dumped at compost pit. The staffs of ICAR-DCR actively participated in the event.

On 26.12.2020 cleaning and sanitization activities were taken up on Directorate’s old building terrace (Plant breeding division). The old iron racks, iron rods, glassware, plastic pipes and old furniture were dusted and placed in an organized manner. The test tube racks were collected and cleaned for further use at tissue culture lab. Reusable glassware like test tubes, funnels, and beakers were collected separately for further analytical works. Thereafter, the terrace floor was cleaned and waste materials were disposed properly. The ICAR-DCR staffs actively participated in this programme by following COVID guidelines.

On 27.12.2020, Swachhta activity was conducted at Volley ball court and Children playground, Residential campus, ICAR-DCR, Kemminje, Puttur. The area nearby volley ball court and children playground were cleaned and the leaf litters, plastic covers were collected and heaped on in a particular place for proper disposal. The road nearby children playground was also cleaned on both the sides and leaf litters were heaped. The children of residential campus got motivated to keep their surroundings neat and clean. The ICAR-DCR staffs and their family members actively participated in the activity.
